Who will build my oak frame?
We offer 3 different services:
- Turn key – we handle every aspect of the build from help with planning, ground works and building all the way to installing the windows, doors and roof. Although this may be more costly, you will have that peace of mind that things have been done correctly with minimal headache to yourselves.
- Installation only service – we will bring the frame to site and install the main structure, and if required we can also install the stud walls and cladding. For this you will need to have the ground works in place along with the brickwork, planning approval if required, and source your own roofer once we have installed your oak frame. We recommend having your roofer booked as close to our installation date as possible.
- DIY flat pack – we will make the oak frame in our workshop, then pack it up well labelled and supply you with clear drawings showing how the frame goes together, supplied with all relevant oak pegs, fixings, DPC and staddle stones. These will then be delivered to your site address.
How will my oak frame get to me?
Depending on which service you require we will either bring it with us to install or it will be delivered to your site, alternatively you can collect directly from our workshop.
Is oak sustainable?
Yes, UK oak – including European oak – is a highly sustainable building material when it is responsibly sourced, as it is a renewable natural resource that absorbs and stores carbon for the entire lifetime of the structure, helping to reduce overall carbon footprint. European oak in particular is harvested from well-managed forests in countries such as France, Germany, and Croatia under strict replanting regulations, and because both UK and European oak require far less energy to process than steel, concrete, or brick and are exceptionally durable, they rarely need replacing, making them among the most environmentally responsible and long-lasting construction materials available.
What is your turnaround time?
Your frame will usually be ready to leave our workshop within 12 weeks.
Do you offer credit options on oak frames?
Not currently, although we do offer a more budget friendly range when it comes to our garage kits.
What should I use to treat my oak frame?
Green oak does not require treatment, nor do we recommend any. Once the frame is assembled, clients can choose to stain or apply a UV-protective finish.
Do I need planning permission for an oak frame?
Planning permission needed depends on a number of factors, from the size of the building to local regulations. Generally, “permitted development” (i.e. no planning required) is a structure that’s no larger than 30m², 2m from the boundary, lower than 4m high and not in front of the property line. You may be best to seek advice from your local planning authority.
Will my oak frame crack and twist?
Yes, an oak frame will naturally crack and twist as it dries and seasons, but this is completely normal and expected with green oak and does not affect the structural strength when the frame is properly designed and built. These surface cracks follow the grain and are cosmetic only, while traditional mortise and tenon joinery, large section timbers, and allowances for natural movement ensure the frame actually tightens and becomes stronger over time, with oak’s slow, predictable movement being one of the key reasons oak buildings have lasted for centuries.
What’s the long term durability of an oak frame?
The long-term durability of an oak frame is exceptional, with a well-designed and properly built oak structure typically lasting 200–500+ years, as proven by historic oak-framed buildings still standing across the UK and Europe today. Oak’s natural density, high tannin content, and resistance to rot, insects, and fungal decay make it one of the most durable construction timbers available. As green oak seasons it tightens at the joints, actually increasing structural strength over time rather than weakening. With minimal maintenance — mainly keeping the base of the posts dry, ensuring good drainage, and allowing airflow — an oak frame can easily outlast brick, block, steel, and most modern construction systems, making it one of the most reliable long-term structural investments you can make.
Can I customise my oak frame?
Yes, as we hand make all aspects of your frames we can easily accommodate any design changes, whether it’s to one of our garage kits or if you have something very specific in mind we can help. Contact us now for your free consultation and quote.
Why an oak frame over traditional brick and block build?
An oak frame garage is superior to a brick or block garage in terms of longevity, appearance, sustainability, and overall property value, as solid oak beams with traditional joinery can last for centuries, age beautifully, and add instant character and kerb appeal, whereas brick and block structures are more functional, visually plain, and typically have a shorter lifespan. Oak buildings are also more environmentally friendly due to timber being renewable and carbon-storing, can be erected quickly with good design flexibility, and are often better suited to period homes, rural settings, and conservation areas, making them a true long-term investment, while brick and block garages mainly appeal due to their lower upfront cost rather than long-term value.
